1 day, 5 points of view and lots of fun

For my Picture Story class we had to photograph a one-day story and cover it using five points of view. I went to the MU Dance and Recreation Association special event staring Sanjukta Banerjee centered around classical Indian dance. I wasn’t able to get the access I was hoping for from Ms. Banerjee while she was preparing but I did meet her husband and 18-month old son and got along very well with the two of them. I covered them quite a bit on Friday evening and then Saturday morning Ms. Banerjee was supposed to teach a dance workshop that I planned on photographing as well. Unfortunately, the little boy fell off the bed early Saturday morning and had to get stitches, causing the workshop to be cancelled. I was there anyway and the women who had shown up for the workshop still hit it off really well and provided some nice interaction moments.

Sanjukta Banerjee performs a classical Bharatanatyam dance during a solo recital at MU's Memorial Union in Columbia, Mo. on Friday, Feb. 19.

Abhishek Bandyopadhyay, Sanjukta's husband, holds their son Reetishman on his lap while Sanjukta performs.

Anna Ellis smiles in surprise while Kalaivani Ramanujam arranges her sari. Ellis, originally from Russia, lived in India for 5 years when she was in her 20s, and joined MUDRA to experience the culture she misses living in Columbia. Ramanujam, originally from India and living in Columbia while her husband finishes his degree, joined MUDRA to connect with other Indians in the area.

Sanjukta Banerjee dips low during a dance performance despite her ornate, traditional attire. Custom dictates that performers of Bharatanatyam dance wear white clothing with gold trimming.

From left to right, Anjanasree Neelakandan, Kalaivani Ramanujam and Yolanda Kumar share a laugh while waiting for the dance workshop on Saturday, Feb. 20. The ladies soon found out the workshop was cancelled but had a good time swapping stories anyway.

What happened to the Photoshopping I requested?

The workshop did take place an hour after you left. We really enjoyed very much.

    Stay Well!
